Field Trip to phyllite in South Fork Nooksack River, Whatcom County

This field trip visits well exposed, 30-foot-high clean exposures of phyllite (Darrington to some, Mount Josephine to others) of the Easton Metamorphic Suite. The metamorphic rock reveals at least 2 obvious deformations caused by subduction-related compression and heating, as well as a short but pleasant walk on an old logging road with views into the South Fork valley.

Wavy, open second generation folds in the Darrington phyllite. A fracture has developed at the left between foliations. See the lady bugs, left center? Click to enlarge the photo.
